Curation by Enfant Terrible Exhibition
“Gestura” is the Medieval Latin word for “gesture,” yet can be read as an abbreviation of “gestural painting.” This style, also referred to as “gesturalism,” describes a method of painting characterized by vivid, dynamic brushstrokes purposefully highlighting the movement of the artist’s hand. It is arguable, however, that the crux of gesturalism lies not only in the artist’s limb, but also in the dynamism imbued in the abstract or figurative artwork created.
After the success of “Gestura” at Koppel Project Soho in 2019, “Gestura” is back for a second edition with a new selection of artworks. The five multidisciplinary artists exhibited in “Gestura II” offer contrasting interpretations of this theme. While some of the artists have produced new work in response to this theme, others have proposed existing pieces utilizing materials such as ink, paint, resin, and silicone.

Gwenyth Fugard's abstract works bear expressive and energetic traces of the artist's hand as dictated by her shrewd stylistic decisions. Helen's Kindcaid's paintings of curtains are heavy with the physical weight of the fabrics depicted, as well as the metaphorical weight of the memories trapped within their folds. Manon Steyaert's silicone artworks defy gravity in the way that they are draped, thus forming folds which infuse them with motion and tension. Maud Leclair's square monotypes are free-flowing pools of color melanges that one's eyes can revel in. Her landscape monotypes, however, offer a controlled interpretation of dynamism that is counterbalanced by bold, bubbly, neo-pop shapes. Finally, Karen Tronel's use of epoxy resin allows her to produce perfectly-poured and visually striking abstract compositions.
