CEREALIA

FT. CHARLES KHOURY, HANNAH SIMPSON, SIMON WILLIAMS

11 - 27 APRIL 2024

TUESDAY - SATURDAY 10AM-5PM

This spring, Marie Jose Gallery has the pleasure to introduce the group show “Cerealia”. The title, which finds its origins in the Latin language, refers to the goddess Ceres and to Springtime. Full of vibrant paintings and playful ceramics, the exhibition features artists from Lebanon and the United Kingdom: Charles Khoury, Hannah Simpson and Simon Williams.

Back by popular demand, Lebanese artist Charles Khoury is known for his colourful acrylics on jute. Through bold patterns and colour compositions, Khoury populates his canvases with wild fauna and flora, with a heavy emphasis on  birds, which resonates perfectly with the exhibition's springtime theme.

Ceramics extraordinaire Hannah Simpson is back as well with an entirely new family of playful, happy monsters. Hannah draws inspiraton from the outside world, nature, people and feelings. Her whimsical creations gained huge popularity in the gallery and online in the last year and we can’t wait to share her new creations.

Finally, Simon Williams presents three of his latest paintings. Simon’s work reflects a deep fascination with energy and illusionary space - urban graffiti and comic book styling having left an indelible mark on his aesthetic. His palette is vivid, with a use of expressive brushstrokes and materials often chosen for their inherent graphic qualities, and his paintings explore a reduced economy of form intended to play with registers of familiarity and ubiquity, serving as symbolic reflections of today’s world.
