FLORADISE

Welcome to Floradise, a floral disco paradise. This women-lead exhibition is an ode to flora and celebration of muliebrity. Noticeably absent from this collection of works is the presence of human beings. While hand-made objects and structures can be witnessed, fauna and flora replace men and women as central artistic subjects. Amid this absence, exotic plants and flowers are free to grow and thrive, reclaiming their place as living and emotive entities.

Behind the works

In Cathy Tabbakh’s work, architectural and botanical elements collide. By placing singular plants within specific settings, the artist invokes pathetic fallacy and depicts plants in a both aesthetically striking and emotionally charged manner. Particularly striking is her use of shadow and light, which allows works such as Les méandres bleues or Breathing Blue to resemble film noir stills.

HelloMarine’s potted plants invite viewers to step into the private sphere of the home. Within this sacred space, plants live their daily lives, blending with the backgrounds that surround them, but also conveying a presence that endows them with the importance of living subjects. The artist’s choice of bold colours and naïve patterns produce a calming effect that mimics the comfort of home.

Karen Tronel’s use of epoxy resin gives her flower-ridden canvases an almost visceral aspect. Indeed, it is precisely the gleam of the resin that brings the flowers to life, luring both our sense of sight and touch as we cautiously approach potentially venomous vegetation. Enjoy at your own risk!

Kate Morgan’s works can be interpreted as opulent phantasmagorias, populated by wild fauna and flora. At first glance, one can observe lush environments and peaceful scenes of life. Upon closer inspection however, one will notice the drama in the details: an iguana eyeing an unsuspecting insect, a tiger preparing to pounce, or a deer dashing in the distance.

Set against limitless landscapes, Nadia Attura’s neon space-cacti are otherworldly and magnetising. Viewers are invited to admire them as they bask in the glow of sunrise or sunset. At times, multiple suns pour their light onto the luminescent cacti, reinforcing the viewer’s sentiment of exploring another dimension or galaxy inhabited only by desert flora.

Sally Anne Fitter makes use of painting and collage to create vivid floral compositions. Her bouquets are an original contemporary take on traditional still lives, incorporating elements of pattern and texture in a unique and innovative manner. Especially noteworthy is the multitude of colour nuances present in the petals of her flowers, rendering them uncannily lifelike.

Finally, ceramic extraordinaire Daria Coleridge presents a series of fluid sculptures infused with movement and dynamism. Like blossoms blooming, her sculptures possess an organic element that makes them seem alive.
