ALL EYES ON YOU
Featuring
Caleen Ladki
Daria Coleridge
“All eyes on you”, is a mixed artist show featuring large colourful paintings by Lebanese artist Caleen Ladki along bold ceramics and fluid blown glass by Italian/American ceramist Daria Coleridge. Travelling through materiality and motion, the artists aim to release their practice from limitations, through the exploration of fluidity and movement, or a freedom that is ultimately joyous and positive.
'All Eyes On You' is a body of work that reflects Caleen Ladki’s view on the power and symbol of the ‘evil eye’ in her immediate environment and culture, exploring in depth the range of emotions it can invoke. Through a vibrant palette of colour and texture, the artist depicts the watchful eye, the protective eye, the unseeing eye, and the evil eye.
The earlier pieces are like a glass mosaic, systematic in design and orderly in schema. Then, like a meteor, a bolt of light, a jolt of colour, smashes the recurring eye patterns into fragments and random bursts of display. The artist has pushed her boundaries and found a new language to express herself: the canvasses are getting larger, her techniques bolder, the pairing of colours more daring. The eye motif is changing: the rims have sharper edges, the circles less delineation, path lines are forming. There is a new order. It's a release from limitations, an escape from confinement, a new sense of direction, a freedom that is ultimately joyous and positive. And that is what Caleen Ladki hopes to convey and inspire in her exhibition.
The largesse of the canvas, the unusual use of colour, the multi layered textures, the patterned motifs and the striking images, all of which engage the viewer to participate and react. There is no one focal point: the eyes of the viewer are constantly roaming, paying homage to her technique and distinct artistry. Each painting affects and effects and hangs proudly in place.
“Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainty.”
Erich Fromm
A close look at her work reveals how the artist incorporates her love of print and weaving into her paintings. This accounts for her distinctive and thematic use of pattern, the repetition of images and endless play on variations, at times soothing, at others stimulating. The artist is also known for her bold approach to colour and intricate use of texture. Her preferred medium is acrylic, usually on a large canvas, which gives her free reign to probe ways in which she can intertwine paint into fabric-like design. She starts with a blank canvas, with only a color scheme in mind, then layers upon layer, organically and instinctively, using her hand, a sponge, a cloth, occasionally a brush, to create a multi-tiered blanket of vibrant hues and muted tones and arresting motifs. The end result appears consistent and smooth, but lurking underneath are subtle depths and wild imaginings. Like the eyes she portrays, the paintings are hypnotic, dazzling, vibrant, enigmatic.
